Berghof Polymeric Tubular Membranes: Automated B-SMART Modules

The Berghof B-SMART concept is an energy optimized process for reliable and economic treatment of medium and high strength industrial process streams and wastewater. The goal of the project is to treat effluent under all circumstances, independently from feed flow and quality fluctuations, resulting in constant permeate flow at any given time. Thanks to a system that automatically manages the plant, the risk of shutdown or capacity-loss is reduced drastically. Under regular flow conditions the system will operate at a low velocity of 1 to 1.5 m/s, with an average energy consumption of only 0.4−0.6 kWh/m3. B-SMART makes use of 5 mm and 8 mm PVDF LE (Low Energy) membranes: both can be backwashed.

Traditional wastewater treatment systems are ineffective in handling the varying peaks and loads of wastewater streams. In addition, these systems are highly sensitive to fouling and system cleaning is a time-consuming, costly and dirty process.

Some customers require solutions that will reduce energy consumption and long-term operating costs, while others place a priority on minimizing upfront capital expenditures. Whichever the case, Sepra will be able to customize the module according to the needs of the situation.

In a typical tubular UF application, a fluid, such as pretreated wastewater, flows through the tubular modules at high velocity, sufficient to maintain a turbulent flow. Activated sludge from the bioreactor is pumped, at an optimized flow rate, through the externally positioned tubular membranes. An integrated automatic backwashing program controls the backwash cycles and backwash time in order to ensure reliable operation under economic conditions. At a typical transmembrane pressure (TMP) of 2 – 6 bar, the permeate stream is forced through the pores of the membrane while suspended particles remain in the retentate stream.

Based on the inside-out principle, feed flows in an axial direction inside the tube and clean water permeates through the membrane wall. This ensures superior fouling control.

The turbulent flow on the membrane´s surface prevents the build-up of particles on the inner surface of the tube, ensuring high flux and prolonged membrane lifetime.

The Berghof tubular PVDF membranes were designed with increased robustness to ensure long membrane life and ease of cleaning.
