The modules of the BRMS-2 series are made of hollow fibers supported on a sturdy stainless steel frame and connected by means of PVC manifolds. The module support structure serves to give the system stiffness. The height of this structure is such as to ensure that the fibers remain rather 'soft', free to move under the action of the air that is insulated from below the module; in fact, the modules integrate a second gatherer for the distribution of air under the fibers through a blower. The air, flowing in the form of bubbles along the fibers, generates around them a turbulent regime that helps keep the fibers clean.

Hollow fibers are designed with an internal support that increases their mechanical strength and therefore lengthens the productive life of the fiber, reasons for which they are used for drinking water, waste water, secondary applications and water reuse.

The modules are fully immersed in the tanks used to collect the water to be treated or in oxidation tanks (or in special compartments created inside of them) in the case of SMBR (submerged-membrane bioreactors).

Typically, in addition to the membrane modules each system includes:
-  An extraction pump for the permeate (and any air trapped inside the fibres), which is reversible and able to generate 0.4 - 0.5 bar depression during the extraction process.
-  This pump will create a depression in the head connectors where the fibers are sealed with epoxy resin.
-  An aeration system to provide air to the membranes. Air is supplied in the form of large bubbles through specific diffusers located below the membrane modules.
-  A clean-in-place circuit, with a tank for washing products and a dedicated pump when required.
-  A backwash system where required.

In the case of submerged membrane bioreactors, the final sedimentation and sand filtration stages are replaced, solving all problems of poor sedimentation of the activated sludge. This also makes it possible to work with sludge concentrations in oxidation tanks much larger than those in traditional systems (up to 8-10 gMLSS/l, as opposed to the traditional 4 gMLSS/l), with all corresponding advantages.
Typical operating conditions in the BRMS-series modules:

* Normal permeate flow rate 10 l/m2.h
* Peak permeate flow rate 15 l/m2.h
Production time / relaxation time 10/1
* with reference to biological treatment of civil effluents, 6-7 g/l. activated sludge, T=25 ºC

NOTE: for good operation of the BMRS-series modules it is fundamental to ensure the elimination of rough and especially fibrous (hair) solids upstream of the biological treatment.  Fine screening is thus recommended (<0.5 mm).
